Osteopathy for Riders
We often get our horses treatment to make sure they are comfortable, but did you know your own body can have a huge impact on your horse?
Your own muscle imbalances and joint restrictions caused by work posture, hobbies or previous injuries can greatly affect your riding. The more the imbalance occurs, the stronger the compensation becomes. This leads to poor coordination of movement and malfunctioning movement patterns. A common imbalance, caused by long hours working at a desk, is a shortening of the hip flexors which block the movement of the pelvis and the lower back. This will prevent you moving smoothly with the horse. Additionally imbalances between left and right will massively affect the balance of your horse, causing them to compensate. We, as horse riders, are athletes and it is important to treat your body as such.
Osteopathic treatment helps to restore movement to the body using soft tissue massage, fascial release, mobilisation and manipulation techniques. As well as treating the areas of compensation, you will get your very own unique program of exercises to help you strengthen and regain healthy movement patterns.
Osteopathy isn’t just for the elite competition horse and rider, making sure that you and your equine partner are working together, in balance and comfort, can prevent injuries and unwanted behaviours from developing. This is important because an imbalance in one of you will have an effect on the other.
